Job Description

ARC Ride is an early stage start up at the forefront of the e-mobility revolution sweeping across Africa. We are leading the charge to enable the mass adoption of Affordable, Reliable, and Clean transportation. This is based on our market-leading battery-as-a-service (BaaS) infrastructure solution that is driving the transition to clean two and three wheel mobility systems in Africa.

We at ARC Ride are incredibly proud of our achievements and are looking for an experienced Chief Engineer/Chief Technical Officer to join our existing passionate and talented team. As a member of the executive team, you will report to the Chief Executive Officer and play a pivotal role in leading and shaping the technological landscape of our organisation. You will oversee the BaaS, R&D, and Technology teams to drive the development of our electric vehicles, battery-swapping infrastructure, software, and data processes. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and partners to design and deliver solutions that are performant, scalable and secure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Develop and execute the overall technical strategy for our battery-as-a-service infrastructure, electric vehicles, systems and data processes, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s goals and objectives.
  2. Provide technical leadership and guidance for the BaaS, R&D, and Technology teams.
  3. Oversee the development of technology-driven products, implementing robust processes to ensure products meet high-quality standards and market demands.
  4. Manage strategic projects and relationships with partners and suppliers across the globe.
  5. Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in electric mobility, batteries, software and data analytics.
  6. Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging research and development activities within each team.
  7. Assess and mitigate technology-related risks, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree (preferred) in mechanical/automotive engineering, or a similar field.
  • 15+ years industry experience.
  • Advanced CAD experience
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (to advanced/technical level).
  • Demonstrated success in leading and managing high-performance technical teams.
  • Solid project management experience.
  • Based in Nairobi (or able to relocate).
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering principles and an understanding of technology trends and capabilities.
  • Experience of product testing and simulation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • In-depth knowledge of battery technologies and latest trends.
  • Development of two or three-wheel electric vehicles.
  • Experience of managing a battery-swapping (or similar) operation at scale.
  • Hands-on experience of software engineering / data analysis.
  • International experience / experience of working abroad.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and certification processes for electric vehicles.
